Hello, I lived in Chain of Ponds and we had a farm there with my Grandpa and Uncle.

Back in the 60s we would visit the cart in September each year after we had been to The Royal Adelaide Show to deliver my Grandpa’s poultry entries with the farm truck and Ford Mainline ute. There to eat a Pie Floater of course.

This was until he passed in 1968.

Although I have lived in Qld since mid 1975 I have been to the cart a few times in the 2000s.

Now the reason I contacted you was because I remember there was a centenary celebration of the Pie Cart where the Premier and the Governor attended in Black Tie dress along with other Adelaide luminaries.

I don’t remember when this happened or whether I was still in Adelaide or here in Qld, but I think it may have been the early 70s when I was still at school at Urrbrae Ag High.

I haven’t read of this in any literature on the pie cart, so perhaps you may like to investigate this affair.

I took Helen there and ate back in 2003 on her first trip to SA and there was a couple from London who had came to visit especially to eat a pie floater as they had seen a program on the pie cart on English TV.

Apparently the cart is World Famous for its Pie Floaters!!!

The guy asked for vinegar and i said “Mate it’s a pie not fish and chips” the cart operator and the couple all laughed about it!!!

Good luck with the search.

Kind Regards

Thanks for replying I wasn’t expecting one actually as i had no idea how old the page was!!!

You have my permission to add the story when you get going.

I’ve seen many put Black sauce or Worcestershire sauce on pies over the years here in Qld.

Vinegar was a new one but when Helen and youngest daughter and husband went to England and Wales a few years ago they came back saying people used vinegar on pies and peas!!!!

What really got us all laughing was when the Uncle and Aunty they had gone to visit had been here early last decade and somehow the conversation got to meatballs and they told us about FAGGOTS!!!!

Well we all cracked up laughing about that as it has a totally different meaning in Australia to the UK!!!!   LOL

Kind Regards
